Representing medicine in the past

Join leading experts- Richard Ormond CBE, art historian and great nephew of John Singer Sargent and Stephanie Snow, Professor of Health, History and Policy at the University of Manchester- in exploring two examples of different ways of representing medicine in history, based on outstanding recent publications. The first paper will provide an introduction to the artist, John Singer Sargent (1855-1925) and his work depicting medical subjects in charcoal portraits and paintings and the second paper will provide insights, using oral history and archives, into many aspects (hospital care, medical education, medical research, the experiences of patients and those who worked there) of the complex history of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals from 1948. Richard Ormond will present on artist John Singer Sargent’s lesser-known charcoal portraits of medical figures and his famous oil paintings like 'The Four Doctors' and 'Gassed.' Stephanie Snow will discuss the post-1948 history of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, based on her book 'Caring in an Age of Reform', highlighting the integration of clinical care, education, and research.
